This paper discusses autonomy in end-of-life issues and instruments of substitute decision making by proxy, personal representative, and courts, also the range and limits of decision making by court appointed representatives, according to the German Civil Code (BGB) and the Care Law (BetrG). In particular, ethical aspects of the Care Law and specific obligations of the proxy are analyzed within the German system.
