Issue 161: Hartmann, Fritz: Vom "Diktat der Menschenverachtung" 1946 zur "Medizin ohne Menschlichkeit" 1960; Zur frühen Wirkungsgeschichte des Nürnberger Prozesses. 1st edition: February 2005; 2nd edition: March 2005

Frits Hartmann analyzes the early history of the German reaction to the Nuremberg Trials on Human Experimentation in the Third Reich. He specifically discusses the change of focus in Alexander Mitscherlich’s two publications 1946 and 1960 and the official statements of the postwar German Chambers of Physicians regarding involvement of physicians as responsible investigators and leaders in cruel human experimentation. Additional to detailed historical information, Hartmann addresses Mitscherlich’s review of a controversy among German physicians regarding a collective guilt of the German medical profession in the Third Reich.
