| Issue 150: Reiter-Theil, Stella: Ethische Probleme der Beihilfe zum Suizid. Die Situation in der Schweiz im Lichte internationaler Perspektiven. February 2004 | | | In 'Ethical Issues of Assisted Suicide' Reiter-Theil discusses problems of error (a), potential abuse (b), and societal implication that may result from the tolerance of assisted suicide. The comparison of different approaches, guidelines, and laws in Oregon, The Netherlands, and Switzerland and the review of international literature as well as of empirical studies reveal open questions and deficiencies of recent practise in the three countries. The ambivalent or in-official tolerance of the dominant role of the lay organizations in assisted suicide among the Swiss medical profession should be developed towards a more consistent ethical attitude offering orientation to those involved, concludes Reiter-Theil.
Key words: aid-in dying, assisted suicide, ethics, guidelines, lay organizations, legalization, Oregon, Switzerland, The Netherlands
